CHENNAI: The Indian Coast Guard, in a joint coordinated operation with Customs and other security agencies, seized 17kg of ganja in Rameswaram.
On receiving information about transhipment of the contraband, Coast Guard personnel at Mandapam station launched a combing operation by deploying Hovercraft ACV H-190.
As officials rummaged the beach area off Fourth Island near Rameswaram, they found 17kg of ganja buried under the sand in eight polythene packets.
However, no boat or people were spotted around the area where the contraband was found.
Officials suspect that the package was smuggled from Andhra Pradesh to be ferried to Sri Lanka. The Narcotics Control Bureau, police and customs officials have launched a detailed investigation.
